TRAVEL SAFETY

It is advisable that you visit your GP or chemist as soon as you have a fairly certain idea of your adventure holiday destination. Ask them what immunisations you may require prior to setting off. Keep in mind that some jabs, like those against hepatitis, are administered in series over a few months. They may also be able to offer you advice with regards to concentrations of diseases such as malaria. Travellers to Laos, for example, may receive advice indicating that if they intend to stay in urban areas a good mosquito net may be adequate protection against the nuisance of non-malarial mosquitoes, while if they are planning to get out in the bush the expense of anti-malarial tablets may be highly justified.

Local payments are still required by some operators. These are one-off payments made, usually in US dollars, to tour leaders in the host country. Other operators have responded to feedback from their clients and have done away with the separate local payment, instead building it in to the overall price of the holiday. Sometimes, local payments are unavoidable as they help fund the on-the-ground costs of small-group adventures to remote locations.

The Know Before You Go campaign is run by the British Foreign & Commonwealth Office (www.fco.gov.uk). Its website says the campaign offers advice designed to 'enable British nationals to be better prepared for their overseas trips with a view to avoiding common travelling traumas, risks and dangers.'

Travellers would be well-advised to seek out appropriate travel insurance prior to embarking, finding a policy that, if possible, covers them for risky activities.
